Avoid Sugary Foods and Drinks to Avoid Poor Oral Health

Why you may struggle with poor oral health

Sugary foods and drinks are the two main culprits of poor oral health. We’re not saying you should never enjoy sugary foods and drinks such as red wine, coffee, tea, soda pop or juices for example. But we do recommend that you enjoy such foods and drinks in moderation and all at once.

Do your oral health a favor. Avoid grazing on sugary foods and carbohydrates that turn into sugar. Avoid sipping sugary drinks, too. Eating these types of foods in this way encourages the growth of bacteria in your mouth. The growth of bacteria leads to oral health problems. Sweet and/or acidic foods and drinks are infamous for weakening tooth enamel. When tooth enamel is weakened, the door leading to decay and cavities is opened.

Instead of sugary foods and drinks, choose real foods that are nutritious and wholesome. There are lots of foods that are good for you to choose from. They taste great and can even help whiten your teeth naturally. Foods such apples, pineapples, raisins, cheese, nuts, strawberries and broccoli actually help to maintain a bright, beautiful and healthy smile. “An apple a day keeps the dentist away!”

Poor oral health is preventable and treatable

Are you struggling with poor oral health issues? If you are, simply implement the following on a daily basis:

  • Brush more often
  • Brush longer (2 minutes or longer)
  • Eat better foods (low-sugar, low-carbohydrate)
  • Floss every day

Most oral health issues are preventable and treatable when caught early, but it’s best to avoid them in the first place. If you’d like more information on the best ways to avoid poor oral health, call us here at Sherwood Park Dental.
