Have you ever left an appointment and felt uncertain or confused about the treatment plan presented? Or have you left feeling apprehensive, and not confident in making a decision? The best thing to do is to get a second opinion.

There is no rule about which dental procedures require second opinions. But it is more likely the case for major treatments such as full reconstruction or oral cancer.

How come my diagnosis changed with a different general dentist?

The reason why treatment plans can vary between dentists is due to their approach/philosophy and training. For example, some dentists may want to fix an issue as soon as it arises, while others are more conservative and prefer to watch how things progress. Or they may want to try a non-invasive treatment, such as Silver-Diamine Fluoride, before beginning treatment.

It is important to have a good relationship and trust with your general dentist and understand why he/she is making certain recommendations.

If you decide you want another opinion, consider these questions after:

Do you agree with the diagnosis the general dentist has made?

What treatment options do you have for the problem?

How much will each option cost you?

What will happen if the problem is not treated?

What are the risks of each treatment option?

How long will the treatment benefits last? Will you need future treatments?

Another way you may want to seek a second opinion is by seeing a specialist. Dentists can specialize in certain conditions such as root canals, oral surgery, and orthodontics. And seeing a specialist in addition to your general dentist can be advantageous.

Weighing Your Dental Treatment Options

Some things to keep in mind if you've received a second opinion, are the different perspectives of each dentist. While a new dentist has the advantage of a fresh outlook, your current dentist has the convenience of knowing your full dental history which can be advantageous.

The important thing is feeling completely comfortable with the care and information you have received prior to making a decision.

Ultimately you need to feel informed and confident that your treatment makes sense. And that your questions have been answered. If you have a good relationship with your dentist it should be absolutely okay to ask to seek out a second opinion. Or if you are uncertain about your situation you can ask your dentist to reexplain your treatment plan and go over your questions or concerns.

Here at Sherwood Dental, we are more than willing to offer or refer for a second opinion for any treatment questions you may have. As well, we welcome anyone who wants to sit down and revisit a treatment plan to go over any questions or concerns they may have. Give us a call and we'd be happy to book you an appointment.

If you're one of the 8 million caregivers in Canada, you’ve got a lot on your mind. You understand how difficult it can be to take care of your loved ones dental care.

When you’re caring for a child—or adult—with a disability or neurodegenerative disease such as Alzheimer's, the challenges can be even greater. It may be hard to know how to adapt your routine to include caring for their oral health.

How much help you give will depend on the individual. If the person in your care can do the basics, let them. Some simple adaptations to brushing routines for those with limited motor function or developmental disabilities can include:

Using an elastic band to help steady the toothbrush in their hands.

Enlarge the base of the brush for better grip with a sponge, rubber ball or bicycle grip.

Lengthen the toothbrush by attaching it to a ruler or wooden dowel for better reach.

Invest in an electric toothbrush or water/air flosser, as they help reach areas that may be getting missed.

Others caregivers may be looking after those with memory issues. People with dementia or Alzheimer's may need someone to clean their teeth every day. The Alzheimer's association recommends these tips for oral health care:

Provide short, simple instructions. Break it down by telling them each step instead of a general statement such as "brush your teeth".

Use a "watch me" technique and have your loved one follow along.

If the person seems agitated or uncooperative, postpone brushing until later in the day.

When in doubt give our office a call or speak to one of our dental Hygienists or doctors. Maintaining regular check up and cleaning appointments will help your loved one have a healthy mouth for years to come.

Approximately six million Canadians avoid visiting the dentist every year because of cost. If you do not have insurance or recently lost your coverage and are looking for options to continue you or your family’s dental care, Edmonton has some great resources.

Children Dental Care

The SHINE Dental Clinic is a student run organization established through the U of A. This organization provides dental care for youth at no cost. Our own Dr. Yeung volunteered at SHINE while he was in dental school.

U of A Orthodontic Clinic is also a good lower cost option for kids who need braces and may not have coverage or limited orthodontic coverage under their parents insurance.

NAIT’s Dental Assisting program provides teeth cleaning and fluoride application to kids and teens for a discounted price.

Adult Dental Care

The Boyle McCauley Health Centre offers dental care to adults who may have difficulties accessing a dental office. They provide treatment for those suffering with mental illnesses, addictions, social barriers, and financial hardships.

NAIT’s Denturist Technology program provides dentures for patients at a lower rate. All services are provided by the students, under the supervision of a registered practitioner.

U of A School of Dentistry takes certain patients depending on the schools educational needs for treatment. They teach in their clinics, so it is important to understand that dental care is delivered in an educational setting with faculty supervision.

All these clinics work limited hours and have some requirements prior to becoming patients. But they are great options to be able to continue to get dental care when cost is a factor.

At Sherwood Dental we believe in making dental care as accessible as possible for our patients. We offer payment plans for those without insurance and direct billing for those who wish to not pay up-front. We also accept assistance programs like Non-Insured Heath Benefits, ADSC and IFHP Refugee program. Give us a call if you have any questions regarding fees and how we can help if you're going through a financial transition.

Give us a call if you have any questions regarding fees and how we can help if you're going through a financial transition.
The post How to Care for Your Teeth When You Don’t Have Coverage appeared first on Sherwood Dental.

When most people visit the dentist for treatment, they often associate it with freezing, and numbness. Although it is a safe and necessary part of the procedure, it's important to know how it works and how long it will last.

Dental Freezing or anesthetic is defined as "medication that produces the temporary loss of feeling or sensation", and is used during treatment as pain control.

There are two types of anesthetic:

Topical Anesthetic - A topical gel rubbed on your gums, creates a temporary numbing around the area of the injection.

Local Anesthetic - This solution is injected near a nerve in your mouth to numb your teeth and surrounding area.

Freezing times are usually different based on where in your mouth treatment is being done.

When the dentist is working on the top of your mouth, they will typically only freeze a few of the teeth. Whereas on the lower part of the mouth the dentist will block freeze an entire area, which may include your cheek, lip, chin and tongue. This freezing usually lasts longer on your lower jaw as well due to the bone density.

Each person processes dental freezing at different rates; and depending on the type of anesthetic used it can typically range from two to six hours.

Some side effects can happen as a result of being frozen; such as biting your lip, cheek or tongue, so be sure to use care when eating and try to stick to soft foods as well as nothing too hot. In rare cases, a nerve can get stimulated during the injection, which can lead to paresthesia: numbness or pain that lasts a few weeks to months. Another rare side effect can be an allergic reaction from the anesthetic, if you think you've had an averse reaction to freezing before, be sure to let us know.

If you know you have a busy schedule after your appointment and wish for some of the freezing to be gone, we do have oraverse (an anesthetic reversal) available. Be sure to ask your dentist about this, and we can give you more information.

Dental Freezing is extremely safe and we try to take all the necessary measures to make sure you are comfortable during your appointment. If you have any questions or concerns be sure to ask us at your next appointment, or contact us to find out more.

Deanna comes to us while working on her undergraduate studies; she currently has a background in Biological Sciences and Psychology; although you may see her in the courtroom in the future as she is studying to take her LSAT (Law School Admissions Test).

For over the past 25 years your visit to Sherwood Dental may have included a hygiene appointment with two of our hygiene superstars. Even if you haven’t had the pleasure of seeing them, I am sure you have heard them around the clinic. Their infectious laughs and personalities have brightened not only our patient’s days but the staffs as well. We are so happy to be able to celebrate with them as they move on to the next chapter…retirement. Although we will miss seeing their smiles around the office we are so grateful that they have been a part of our lives at Sherwood Dental.

Jan’s career as a Registered Dental Hygienist began when she graduated from the University of Alberta in 1973. She began working at Sherwood Dental 31 years ago! Jan was able to build a strong and loyal relationship with many of the patients she saw, many whom have seen her since she started. She built her life in Sherwood Park raising her two children, and now cherishing her two granddaughters. You may have seen her around at yoga, the pool, walking, or volunteering at her church. This past November she fractured her arm and was off for two months, then came back working half days earlier this year. Since her injury she has been suffering with radial nerve problems and had to make the hard decision of retiring.

Lisa’s career began in Saskatchewan in 1981 as a Dental Therapist treating children in the Saskatchewan Dental Plan. A move to Sherwood Park in 1988, prompted her to return to school so she could work as a Registered Dental Hygienist in Alberta. Throughout her career she has worked in private practice, and as a clinical instructor at the University of Alberta, and NAIT. We are lucky that most of her clinical practice was spent here at Sherwood Dental, where she worked part time for 26 years. This allowed her the chance to enjoy both a career and family, raising two active boys with her husband Pat.

Jan and Lisa couldn’t leave without saying one last thing about their time at Sherwood Dental, and about their retirement.

“I was very reluctant to retire because I love all my patients and look forward to their visits two or more times a year. I am very sad to leave all the dentists and staff. Love you all!” - Jan

“I will miss all the staff and patients at Sherwood Dental. You have allowed me into your mouths but also your lives. I consider all of you friends, and will miss you all. After 36 years in dentistry, I am looking forward to retirement and spending time with family and friends and of course chilling at the lake.” – Lisa

As bittersweet as retirement is, we could not be happier for Jan and Lisa. These ladies are more than just hygienists, they are role models, therapists (at times), trailblazers, friends, and family.

Thank you Jan and Lisa for your dedication, hard work, and friendship.

Building Community. Growing Hope. Supporting Change.

The Mustard Seed is building community right here in our area, and Sherwood Dental was privileged to lend a hand!

The Mustard Seed is providing emergency shelter, food, clothing, hot showers, hygiene supplies and acceptance to those experiencing poverty. But making a real difference in the lives of individuals involves more than providing essential services and basic needs. They are also working to help individuals find sustainable housing and employment so that they will be able to move on and begin rebuilding their lives.

Evening meals are served Monday through Saturday to individuals and their families. Our Sherwood Dental group helped prepare and serve one of those evening meals to over 250+ people Monday, February 8, 2016! It was epic and so rewarding!

Here's what our business coordinator had to say about it:

Our Team really enjoyed volunteering @The Mustard Seed for the evening. We came with a group of twelve people from our office and met at their church location to serve a dinner meal. We met with Judy who was really organized and efficient in quickly getting our team to cook the meal and prep for serving over 250 people. The hot meal was complete with meatballs, rice, mixed vegetables, dessert, salad & buns. One team member prayed to bless the meal and then each person was served. Each team member had a job to do and two people acted as runners to keep the food coming! When the community all had their meals, the team was encouraged to take a plate and eat with the community. We all really felt this was an amazing opportunity and realized what a blessing this night was. We'd love to do it again! ~ Angela

One of our RDAs said of her participation:

"I think it's important to support amazing local organizations like the Mustard Seed. It was a sobering experience. It's easy to get caught up in your own problems and forget that there are people in our city who have gone days without a meal. I've never lived in want or need of any basic necessities, so at the very least I can offer my time. Hopefully others will continue to do the same!" ~ Raena

The Mustard Seed's essential services are only available because of people like you, people like us. Consider taking action and lending a hand in building community in our area. Partner with The Mustard Seed today!

Thanks to The Mustard Seed for building community. Thank you for growing hope. Thank you for supporting change! Sherwood Dental is privileged to have been a part of all that you do for others and the heart you share in our community.
